The shell left behind after the beastie has metamorphosed.

oh, I know them very well :)
We have Cicadas here. They poor things only see the light of day every 13 to 17 years or so and then only for a couple of days. Bird and other animals have a feast once they emerge. They are very clutsy and totally harmless, but do look a bit scary since they are so big. They are also very loud :) Great capture! In my portfolio I have a shot of my daughter holding one :)
