Who Am I - The Sequel.

I'm Amphipsalta cingulata the Cicada.
Native to New Zealand and our largest with a wingspan of 80mm.
NZ has 42 species and subspecies of Cicada all of them unique to us.
These dudes usually emerge at the end of Jan early Feb and are currently kicking up quite a racket, hence their common name Clapping Cicada.

These singing loverlys are a bit of an oddity in the scheme of things.
The male is the noisiest one and does most of the talking !!!!

@Philip: Strangely enough Philip although the Kiwi is our national bird very few NZers have ever seen one, even captive !
We have a special piece of fauna down here also, a deadly predator of the Springbok..........It's called an All Black.

It's an interesting "hard wired" reaction that us humans have towards our little friends.
Guess it must have served some valuable purpose in the past.

@Ti: Sure Ti the ones in your picky are probably smaller.
Notice in the comment I left you I called them cousins not the same species !
And yes these dudes do have a wingspan of 80mm or so, have seen members of this species quite a bit smaller as well.
